I've been considering which ethical issue to be going with for a while now, and I think I've made a decision as to where I'm headed. It might spark some conversations or even help Danielle out maybe :)
I'm gonna try and look at quite a broad area, as I feel I'll have greater choice when I look at perhaps specialising into one area for each image/graphic. I was thinking of going with the issue of Humanity's awareness of the carbon footprint. We are gradually becoming more aware of the mark we are all leaving on the planet, and I think this will be pretty much the main issue we as a civilisation must tackle. This topic could include future power sources, eco living, and even the next form of transportation after the combustion engine.
Going for such a broad area is going to either mean I do tonnes and tonnes of research, or go ahead and look into a specific aspect of the area.
More pondering methinks...

I am so stuck on what to do cuz in previous projects ive looked at social issues and i feel this is my comfort zone however i want to explore the other subjects but havent a clue where to start? is it a good idea to be doin tonnes of research or just focus on your chosen topic????
i've got together loads of stamps that people have lent me but thats as far as i've got. also my laptop is buggered so it difficult getting access to the internet!
I need help!!!!!
i'd move away from your comfort zone if you're used to working in response to social issues. you should choose upon your ethical issue following some broad research into all the subjects - in doing this you will find something that interests you, or at the very least something that you feel you can find enough information about. if you can't access the internet then pick up a newspaper - there are always reports on things like climate change, identity fraud etc. i'd start by picking some of the things off the list in the brief, and reading around the subject. find some articles and start annotating them with your own words, and work from them with images (your own drawings / photos etc) / quotes etc and you will start to build a visual language that you can develop next term.
look at existing designs that communicate the subject you have chosen: analyse them, thinking about colour, type, composition, tone of voice etc, and build a library of things like posters, adverts, corporate IDs - anything related to your subject that you can either take hold of and work with, or move away from if you think they are dated / visually un-inspiring.
looking at other stamps will help when it comes to applying this visual language to the stamp design, but don't just 'collect' them - critically appraise them - do they communicate well? do they take advantage of the characteristics of postage stamps: size; global audience etc? to start with, look back to the first post on this blog where i wrote some questions that you can start thinking about...
james
thanks very much james i will see how i get on
I've been getting some initial reserach done to do with stamp design and have chosen to look at the ethics of the digitial age.
I'm interested in the theme not just in terms of the artifical intelligence and identity theft but also in terms of other ethical issues the digital age has now introduced.
TV on demand - whilst this can be a bonus scientists have comented on the time we spend watching television as this can effect our senses of hearing and sight. Also too much bad news in the world always takes priority.
Internet socialisation - websites such as myspace and facebook where anyone can create an account talk to people and yet be someone else entirely.
Digital photography - incidents whereby digitial cameras are so easy to use, new laws have to be put in place to stop photographs being taken of anyone without their consent.
A good example of this is a father being accused of paedophilia for taking a photograph of HIS children.
i'm not sure, much like Craig, as to whether to do a lot of reserach into each of these areas or focus on a specific one.
Any comments or help is appreciated - A bit stuck now
Shane
