I have found it hard to find ANYTHING about how you can protect your identity, most of the things I have looked into have been about banks being safe and how the bank can protect your account details. I wondered if people really know how they can protect themselves from such crimes? For example I am constantly finding peoples bank receipts on/in the cash machine, now being a good person I just put them in the bin but if a fraudster came along they have your ID in their hands.
The problems I'm having is finding government based media that explains how you can stop it, I know the basics like shredding documents, keeping passwords safe etc and I have found one website that may help but I don't it's enough.
Also how can I visually show this issue, it's mainly all text?
If anyone has any ideas, it would be appreciated.

steph - you probably have more ideas than you think here. how about starting by seeing your 4 stamps as a way of informing people of the dangers of identity theft, and also educating them on how to prevent it? 2 stamps for each of these things. yes, shredding documents and covering your pin at the cashpoint are basics, but this is how people get caught out, so maybe the basics are all that is needed to start with?
postage stamps are a good place to communicate to people about this subject, as ironically, inside the envelope the stamp is on, is probably the information the recipient doesn't want to lose, so there could be something there to think about.
you can be illustrative with text don't you think? think of creative ways of using letterforms to communicate information both visually and through the text itself. or, illustrate the information yourself, and include a line of text to support the image.
what springs to my mind is the isotype diagrammatic illustrations that are used for government information and signage etc - like this: http://www.smartopinion.org/images/chip&pin.jpg
tapping into an existing visual language might be a good starting point, and like i've mentioned in other posts, manipulating it to communicate your message: altering the hand in the logo for example? i think there's a logo to encourage people to cover their hand at cashpoints as well?
