Healthcare - NHS

I am in need of some help... :)

I have been researching into the NHS and looking at the good and bad areas of it. I have only really been able to find negative stories and articles about the NHS, looking at their triumphs I have looked at their 60th anniversary and a few other little stories to add to the positive side.

I have been referring to the brief and I have become a little stuck. It says that we need to collect existing graphic languages responding to our issue.. etc. I'm not sure what to look at and research for my issue. I have plenty of written stories but not anything that could reflect my issue through graphical languages.
Should I look at protests/posters against the NHS?

I have collected lots of stamps (old and new) since the beginning of the summer break, and I have looked at different layouts and sizes of stamps.

hey Danielle
I'd try lookin for anything you can find NHS related a you suggested in terms of posters and anything they have done.
Better to have done something than nothing =)
I'm not really sure what else to suggest.....

You say that you have only found negative articles, well this is typical of the media.
If you are still looking for the other side, I will be happy to give you two good stories.
I personally have never had a problem with the NHS and I have visited my hospital many times.
As far as the visual side goes, I'm having the same problem but just keep looking.
Sorry that isn't much help

steph is right - you will tend to find just the negative side to any ethical issue in the press, as that's what sells papers etc.

what 'issue' within the nhs are you looking at? baring in mind that the nhs isn't an ethical issue in itself, but healthcare does bring to the surface many issues e.g. abortion, IVF etc. things like these are all about opinions - right or wrong, should they or shouldnt they etc, and your task as the designer is to present the information for the audience to make a decision over.

i'd be inclined to focus at this point on a specific issue that healthcare or the nhs presents. abortion is a key issue (although im not sure how current it is, but perhaps you can find an anniversary or occassion that fits in with 2008, though this isnt essential) - you could look at the history of the subject and the changing opinions on it, the move from illegal backstreet clinics to nhs hospitals etc.

my advice for anyone who is struggling to find graphic examples of for/against comments on your chosen ethical issues is to look at the graphic languages of the subjects themselves, and think about how they can be changed to say new things. in terms of healtcare - think about basics: colour - what colours are associated with healthcare and how can you use these. e.g. the blue nhs logo in a certain type style. why is it blue, why sans serif? really analyse the things you take for granted, and you can begin to manipulate things. e.g. what would turning the logo from blue to black communicate? what about taking the same type style but changing the lettering etc. icons - hospitals are full of specific signage for certain areas / illnesses / clinics etc, could you use or change these for subtle communicating of a complex issue?

look for metaphors that link to the subject - a cliché for something like abortion might be a seed growing etc. a stork carrying a baby etc, like the old wives tale etc... there are dozens.

my main suggestion is to put pen to paper and start making marks and images and post them on the blog for comment. there is no wrong way to start this process, but as with any project you have to start somewhere!
